It came as a huge relief to this year’s Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) students that the education department has directed all city colleges to provide provisional admissions through the minority quota on the basis of a validated marksheet issued by the school principal.

Some students were left in the lurch because the CBSE board had not yet issued them mark sheets and so colleges were refusing them admission through the minority and management quotas.

Sarath Kumar, a standard 10 CBSE student  from Sharjah, Dubai, was perplexed when he found that the colleges in the city were not accepting his admission form. “I was seeking admission in HR College through the minority quota, but they refused to grant me admission since I did not have my original marksheet. I explained to them that the board has not yet released my marksheet and even showed them my school leaving certificate and a letter from the school but they still refused admission.”

After receiving several complaints from students like Kumar, the deputy director’s office issued a circular on July 2 informing all colleges to accept validated mark sheets from schools in place of original mark sheets in such cases. A senior education official from the deputy director’s office, Charni Road, said, “These students were stranded through no fault of their own. If we do not open up this option they will not get admission anywhere. The CBSE students should get their class X results validated by the school principal with a stamp and signature.”

“We understand that the original marksheets have not reached them as yet, so the admissions committee have come out with this alternative,” he added.

However, the students will receive only provisional admission, on the condition that they submit their original mark sheets once they get them. “We advise schools to check the students original mark sheets once they have received it and only then confirm the admission. If they find any inconsistency between the scores given by the school and the original mark sheet, they can cancel the child’s admission,” said the official.

Meanwhile, the CBSE students have still not received their original marksheets though the results of class X were declared on May 31. They could only see their aggregate marks online.  Rama Sharma, public relations officer, CBSE said that the students should receive their marksheets next week. “The marksheets have already been dispatched by the Chennai Region office, which includes Maharashtra. The mark sheets will not be long in coming,” she said.

Indu Mathur, principal of Apeejay School, Navi Mumbai, said, “Students have not yet received their class X marksheets. The board recently sent us a consolidated grading sheet, which contains the overall school scores. We have started giving results to the students with the school stamp and letterhead.”
