Fed up with the suspicious nature of her husband, a woman on Sunday afternoon allegedly flung her two-year-old daughter into the Mula river from Harris Bridge, near Bopodi. The police and the fire brigade team were searching for the baby till late in the night.

They instead stumbled upon a teenager’s body, identified as Amol Taiyare, 17, who went missing from his residence on Friday.

The child throwing incident came to light when Nanda Pujari informed the police that her daughter Pinky Pillay, 24, who was under the influence of alcohol, threw her daughter into the river.

Pinky and her husband Vinod are slum dwellers in Bopodi and have two daughters.

Pinky had a fight with her husband and went out of the house with her two-year-old daughter. On her return, she said that she had thrown her into the river.

The police said Pujari, who resides next to Pinky’s hutment, told them Vinod often fought with Pinky over their second daughter and suspected her character. He claimed that he is not the biological father of the two-year-old daughter.

Deputy commissioner of police (zone IV) Sanjay Jadhav said, “Our aim is to search for the child’s body. We will scrutinise facts and take action.”

Architecture student drowns
An architecture student drowned after a New Year party on Sunday. He was identified as Ravi Shankar Balpate, 24, a resident of Akash-Ganga Society in New Sangvi.

Assistant police inspector Uddhav Zavare of Uttamnagar police chowki, who is investigating the case, said, “Balpate and his friends visited a water spot near the Khadakwasla dam on Sunday. He knew how to swim. But after getting into the water, he disappeared within 15 minutes. His friend informed the fire brigade and us. We reached the spot and found that some of the youths were under the influence of alcohol. A local resident, Rakesh Arya, and the fire brigade searched in the waters for 45 minutes before finding his body.”

According to the police, “Ravi, whose father died last year, was the youngest among three brothers. He studied at Marathwada Mitra Mandal’s College of Architecture. As some of his friends were under the influence of alcohol, there are chances that the deceased too might have been under its influence.” Later, the body was handed over to the family.

Pedestrian dies in highway mishap
A pedestrian, Humraj Premdas, 45, was knocked down by speeding car while crossing the road in front of a construction site in Baner on the Mumbai-Bangalore highway on December 31. He succumbed to his injuries on Saturday night at the hospital.

The Chatuhshrungi police have detained the suspect, identified as Vaman Narayan Deshpande (55) of Erandwana.

Boy booked for kidnapping girl 
A friendship between two schoolmates turned into a nightmare for a 14-year-old girl after she was kidnapped by her jilted lover, who forced her to marry him.

The incident came to light when the girl’s mother lodged a first information report (FIR) at the Nigdi police station against the 17-year-old boy on Saturday.

The victim’s mother is a housewife and the father a tailor, while the boy’s parents are labourers. Both families reside in the same colony.

Assistant police inspector PV Jadhav said, “While the boy is in class X, the girl is in class VIII of a Nigdi-based Marathi medium school. On Saturday, the victim left for school. The boy forcefully took her along. A case of kidnapping was filed against the boy.”

Deputy commissioner of police, Dnyaneshwar Chavan said, “We alerted the boy’s family and made a list of their relatives in Pune. Later, we traced the boy and the girl to the boy’s maternal aunt’s home in Aundh on Saturday night.”

The boy, a minor, was produced before a court and released on bail.

PMPML bus catches fire
A Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus caught fire on Karve Road at 7pm on Sunday. Nobody was injured in the incident. The bus was going to Warje.

The Erandwane fire brigade team reached the spot and put out the fire. According to the police, “ When the bus reached the spot opposite SNDT College, the engine caught fire due to a short circuit. Some  passengers got down through the rear entrance and others used the emergency window. There were no casualties.”
