Dr Praveen Gokhale, a child specialist practising at LH Hiranandani Hospital, was arrested by Mulund Police for harassing his airhostess wife, Rekha (name changed), after his anticipatory bail application was rejected by a sessions court on Friday.

The court took into account Rekha’s allegation that Gokhale had drawn Rs10,000 from her bank account without her consent. Her lawyer BL Jagtap also alleged that Gokhale had beaten up Rekha and her father after the cops drew panchnama of their houses in Thane and Mulund on March 6. A non-cognisable offence was registered against Gokhale for the assault.

On March 4, Rekha filed a first information report (FIR) with Mulund Police, alleging mental and physical harassment by her husband and in-laws and criminal breach of trust.

As per her statement made in the FIR, Rekha got married to Gokhale on April 25, 2003. A son was born to them within a year of marriage. She claimed that her husband suffered from mental illness, having bouts when he suddenly turned violent.

“Ours was an arranged marriage. My in-laws did not disclose anything about my husband’s mental illness before our marriage. Even after marriage, they would not tell me what was exactly wrong with him. They would not even let me take him to a psychiatrist for counselling,” accused Rekha in her FIR.

Rekha also claimed that her husband and in-laws used to take away her entire salary,  giving her a pittance to fend for herself and her son. “When I decided to open a new bank  account for my salary in March last year, my in-laws told me to leave the house with my son. Since then, I have been living with my parents.

My husband has not bothered to meet our son even once after that. As he showed no sign of taking responsibility of our son, I decided to approach the police,” she said.

After the FIR was filed under section 498A (cruelty against wife) and section 406 (criminal breach of trust) against Gokhale, his parents - Mugdha and Vidyadhar - and brother Prasanna, police drew a panchnama in their Thane and Mulund residences for search of ‘streedhan’.

“After the panchnama was drawn, my husband turned violent and assaulted me at our Mulund residence. When my father tried to save me, he bashed him up too,” said Rekha.

Gokhale stated in his anticipatory bail application that his wife had filed an FIR against him and his family as they failed to reach a settlement after separation. Principal judge Ashok Bhangale rejected his bail application, saying that police needed to investigate about the money drawn from Rekha’s account. Gokhale’s family, however, was released on bail.
