BANDRA: If you found the Devnagari script a tad difficult to put on paper, meet Anil Chavan of Shri Handwriting, who has combined the script with the age-old Modi script to get the strokes moving easier and faster. Students can now write faster and complete their exams on time, specially if it is Hindi, Marathi or Gujarati.

People can enhance their own image too by incorporating the Modi script in their writing style, as, according to Anil,  “your writing reveals a lot about your character”.

The Modi script was earlier used to write Marathi. It originated as a cursive variant of the Devnagari script during the 17th Century AD. It was used until the 1950s, when Devnagari replaced it as the Marathi script. Anil is a certificate-holder in Modi script from the Archaeology Department of Elphinstone College.

He found children write slowly because of the wrong style of penning alphabets.

“I have found that certain alphabets in Devnagari like ‘ta’, ‘pha’ which should be written from left to right are actually being written the other way round. This slows down writing,” Anil says.

Even today, there are a lot of documents, especially in courts, written in the Modi script, which need to be deciphered. If one has knowledge of the script, he can translate these documents easily, he said.

“Every paper has reserved marks for handwriting and if we can write faster, it will definitely help us to finish our paper on time.

I lose a lot of marks in my regional language because I can’t complete my paper,” says Gauri Pradhan of St Charles High School, Vakola. She agrees that a speedier style of writing can help.

Says Piyush Morale, a student of Parle Tilak English School in Vile Parle, “Though I complete my papers on time, my handwriting is not neat.” He plans to work on his handwriting in Marathi soon.

“The most important factor about handwriting is the presentability of alphabets. The right strokes, the curves, the word formation. If all combine in a neat presentation, a simple letter can portray the mental state of the writer,” Anil adds.
