November 21 is a red-letter day for the city police. They were  successful in deporting 10 ‘most-wanted’ gangsters from the UAE.  DNA looks back at their high-profile crime file. From Bhaijan to Fruit King, they once terrorised city streets and went to the Gulf.  Here is the ‘history-sheet’.

Arif Aboobakar Shaikh;  age 43

Husband of one of Chhota Shakeel’s three sisters. Known as  ‘Bhaijan’ by the underworld gang, he is among the most respected members of the Dawood gang. The D-Company addresses him as ‘Bhaijan’.

According to intelligence sources, Arif was running an extortion syndicate in Mira Road before leaving for Dubai. Wanted in a POTA case by the Gujarat police in connection with the murder of MLA Hiren Pandya. According to police sources, the two assailants who were arrested in connection with Pandya murder case had confessed that it was ‘Arif Bhaijan’ who helped them and sheltered them. Fled to Dubai nine months ago.

Mohammad Salim Mohammad Iqbal Qureshi;  age 33

Considered a prize catch. Salim is the blue-eyed boy of Chhota Shakeel. Shakeel addresses him as his kid. Salim is married to the sister of Chota Shakeel’s wife.

Salim’s rise in the D-gang has been phenomenal. Salim’s father Umar Qureshi is a fruit-vendor in Null Bazaar area of Mumbai, that’s how he got anointed as Salim ‘Fruit’. Before joining the gang, Salim was exporting fruits to Dubai.

He settled down in Dubai and is known to control the multi-crore duplicate Viagra business of the D-gang. He has offices in Dubai and London and owns a plush bungalow in Dubai. He also owns a sleek white-coloured Jaguar car in Dubai. He has cases of extortion registered against him including the alleged extortion calls to actor Mona Singh of ‘Jassi’ fame.

Shakeel Ahmed Shaikh alias Khota Shakeel; age 35

He is very good at imitating and mimicking Chhota Shakeel. He is so good at it that he calls up people for extortion posing as Chota Shakeel.

A high-profile builder in Mumbai is said to have paid him a hefty sum after being fooled by his mimicry. And a few days later when Chhota Shakeel himself called up, the bewildered builder said that he had already paid the money. This is when Shakeel Ahmed got the name ‘Khota’ Shakeel. Khota Shakeel’s father was the gate-keeper in Chhota Shakeel’s office on Temkar street in Bhendi Bazar. He fled from India along with Fahim Machmach. Khota Shakeel is also called ‘Penda’ in the underworld because of his stout body structure and he would always drop in at anybody’s house for lunch or dinner. “He always wanted free food,” a police officer said.

Shahid Miya Nathu Miya Qureshi; age 33.

Another brother-in-law of Chhota Shakeel. Believed to be in the extortion racket of the gang. His criminal history is being verified.

Jamil Haji Abdul Jabbar Shaikh Jamil; age 31

Even Dawood Ibrahim calls him Haji Saab. Seven cases of extortion had been registered against him. He used to make extortion calls on the directions of Anwar (brother of Shakeel). He was also detained by the police in 1998 under MPDA by the Pydhonie police station.

Shaikh Mohammad Sabir Suleman; age 42

Three cases have been registered against him, one each of extortion, murder and assault. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had arrested him in a hawala racket case in 1998 from Zaveri Bazaar.

Anjum Adam Phajalani; age 48

He is wanted in several cases of murder and MCOCA cases. He is also an accused and wanted in the Bharat Shah case (Chori-Chori Chupke Chupke case).

Is part of D-gang’s extortion racket.

Mustafa Ameen Gulam Mehmood; age 31

Abdul Aziz Ibrahim Dholakia; age 50
