Navratri goes social. While people know Mumbai for its Ganesh festival celebrations, there are many Navratri mandals that deserves mention.

A group of youngsters have come together to give all information on social media about these mandals. Also, they have started posting pictures on Twitter from this year. Not only this, many mandals of South Mumbai, will have a Facebook and Twitter live of their main aartis for the residents who were once part of SoBo but have now shifted to suburbs.

Yogesh Waghela, one of the core group member of Facebook and Twitter page of Mumbaichi Navratri, said, "For the last five to six years we have been posting pictures of the idol and the mandal on Facebook and Instagram. Starting this year we have even come on Twitter.

"In Mumbai, even Navratri is celebrated with the same fervour and excitement, like Ganesh Chaturthi. There are many mandals. To be honest, in the last few years close to 100 mandals, that celebrate Navratri, have contacted us. From old mandals from South of the city to Central and Western suburbs — all want social media presence," said Waghela.

Waghela and his friend's aims to take the details of the mandals, the celebrations, the idol to the common public, they even allow mandals to post pictures and special programs by tagging them, which also can be seen on their pages. Waghela says that there are Devi puja is carried out thrice every year in Mumbai — once in the middle of the year, then during Navratri and some have started putting up idols during Diwali too.

Their website has details of almost three dozen mandals and there's a map which when pressed takes the devotees directly to the spot where the mandal is located.

Many mandals have also decided to go live during their aartis that they perform for the devi on social media. One such mandal is the Chirabazaar Tarwadi Sarvajanik Navratrotsav Mandal located in South Mumbai has decided that the eight day aarti of Navratri they will be going live on Facebook. Amit Bhadricha of the mandal says, "On eightth day, the aarti is huge. We even have a gondhal that lasts for longer time. We have many residents who have shifted from here to other locations. These live aartis on social media is watched by them and people who have gone far feel connected to the celebrations."

The Mumbaichi Navratri group is even planning an award ceremony for the best aagman (welcome program), best murti (idol), best decoration in the near future to take the initiative a step further.
