Even as the Uttar Pradesh government is mulling a 'thaali' priced at just Rs 5, a social worker in the BJP-ruled state has launched a ‘Yogi Thali’ for paltry Rs 10 in Allahabad district.

Allahabad  Mayor Abhilasha Gupta launched highly subsidised but rich in diet ‘Yogi Thali’ for poor on Sunday. The scheme is, however, not funded by taxpayers' money and is an initiative of an individual.

Named after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the ‘thali’ offers Rs 10 offers daal, two tandoori chapattis, rice, one seasonal vegetable, salad and achaar.

Last year, the Chief Minister had last year announced to offer a complete meal to labour classes and poor for Rs 5. The scheme was to be run on a PPP (public-private partnership) basis would have been implemented by the Urban development department.

The main objective of the scheme was to ensure that no one in Uttar Pradesh slept empty stomach. But the ambitious scheme of the Chief Minister, however, could not take off.

The scheme was envisaged on Tamil Nadu's 'Amma Canteens' and Karnataka's 'Indira Canteens'. In Tamil Nadu, Amma Unavagam (Amma Canteen) is a food subsidisation programme run by the state government that is quite popular among the people. Under the scheme, municipal corporations of the state-run canteens that serve food at low prices.

Similarly, Indira Canteens in Karnataka were launched last year to serve breakfast at Rs 5 and lunch and dinner at Rs 10. Earlier, the BJP government had launched Atal Jan Ahaar Yojana in Delhi.

The 'Yogi Thali' is an individual initiative of a social worker Dilip alias Kaake who launched the affordable meal at Attarsuiya locality in Allahabad. “I have named it after the Yogi Adityanath ji as he is working hard for the welfare of the poor,” said Dilip.

Launching the 'Yogi Thali', Allahabad Mayor Abhilasha Gupta said that the disabled, poor and needy people, who could not afford full meal, would benefit from the service for Rs 10. She lauded the efforts of Dilip for launching the service and naming it after the Chief Minister.
