SP, BSP in battle mode over recruitment scam

LUCKNOW: The Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) are fighting a bitter battle over the police recruitment scandal.

SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Friday lambasted chief minister Mayawati’s decision to annul the recruitment of as many as 6,504 constables as “unconstitutional”. He also said that over 9,000 “fake” cases against SP workers and leaders have been filed over the past three months in a “fit of vengeance”.

The government retaliated by saying that there was clear evidence of corruption in the recruitment. DGP Vikram Singh denied Mulayam’s charges and said that no undue action was being taken against the SP.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the police recruitment scam has been handed over to the Anti-Corruption Organisation which has already swung into action.

FIRs have been filed against the 12 IPS officers, besides 18 additional SPs and 40 deputy SPs. They have been found guilty of “criminal misconduct” during the preliminary inquiry done by Shailja Kant Misra, ADG, STF.

“The Mayawati government is going to cancel recruitment of all the 22,000 constables recruited during our regime… she is out to fill her coffers… the CM is making money at the rate of Rs 3 crore an hour,” Mulayam said.

The DGP refuted Mulayam’s insinuation that the Mayawati government would throw out all 22,000 constables recruited during the previous regime saying, “Candidates who have been selected through a fair process will remain in the police force.”
