Two years after the Supreme Court read down Sec 377 legalising consensual sex between two adults even if they are of the same sex, India is getting her first LGBTQIA anthem. Sung by one of the community's most well-known equal rights activist and Mr Gay India 2014 Sushant Divgikar, the single Love is Love, has been written and composed by Swedish music producer, songwriter, author and artiste Petter Wallenberg who has founded the international LGBTQIA rights organisation Rainbow Riots. Divgikar let DNA in on how he collaborated closely in the making of the song with Wallenberg. “We wanted a song with a unversal appeal which will work with audiences unfamiliar with English here in India too. That's why the lyrics are a mix of Hindi and English. We have also incorproated the sitar, harmonium, tabla and dhol along with the Western orchestration.”

The video for the foot tapping anthem features Sushant Divgikar in his drag alter-ego avatar as Rani Ko-He-Noor along with the Dancing Queens - a trans women-led Indian collective that showcases expressions of transgender life through the medium of dance. The former Bigg Boss contestant Divgikar said that the song was being released on all major digital platforms worldwide. “I like to think of it as a Pride Anthem since I want to see this as a song which goes beyond the community to ask people to take pride in their own identity irrespective of caste, class, religion, region, nationality, language, gender, sexuality or food habits, “ he said and explained: “Worldover gay anthems are marked by themes of perseverance, inner strength, acceptance, pride, and unity. I wanted all that but given the sharp exclusion we see around in the Indian context I wanted inclusion to be the dominant theme in this anthem.”

The model, VJ, reality show participant, actor, singer, and now drag performer 27-year-old Divgikar says he channeled all his fandom for the video. “I've always loved Sunita Rao, Shweta Shetty and Priyanka Chopra in their videos and used them as reference points to create my own look in the video.”

He signed off reminding everyone, “Now that India finally allows people to love freely and without fear, lets use this anthem to enthuse and get into the real battle for equality and inclusion which lies ahead.”
