Day after a Hindu group leader was shot dead in broad daylight, tension was palpable in Amritsar after the members of Hindu Sangharsh Samiti and other allied groups led a protest demanding arrest of the killers.

Vipin Sharma, President of Amritsar unit of Hindu Sangharsh Sena was shot dead by two unidentified youth when he had gone to the market on his motorcycle on Monday. The incident captured on a CCTV camera showed two men opening fire at unarmed Sharma. The face of one of the accused was visible in the footage.

Even as the police started investigation into the case, large number of members of the Hindu Sangharsh Sena and several other groups gathered and refused to conduct the cremation, until compensation was announced. The members demanded a job for one of the family members and financial compensation to the bereaved family.

Even as the police tried to assuage the members, a number of them marched towards the Amritsar Railway Station and blocked the Amritsar-Ferozepur Railway line for over an hour. Some of them even pelted stones at the railway engine, however no one was injured.

Later in the afternoon, the member agreed to conduct the cremation after they were assured of an effective police probe into the case. The incident comes days after an RSS leader was shot dead outside his house in Ludhiana by two unidentified youth on a bike. The case was transferred to National Investigation Agency (NIA) by the Punjab government.

BJP State President Vijay Sample condemned the killing and called for an all party meet to discuss the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Leader of Opposition Sukhpal Khaira also slammed Captain Amarinder Singh-led government for failing to maintain law and order in the state leading to targeted killings.

"There are repeated political murders taking place in the state. Instead of stepping up investigation, the government transferred the RSS leader's murder case to NIA. Will the government transfer all cases to NIA? What about Punjab Police? Punjab needs a regular Home Minister," said Khaira.
