A livewire on stage and a stylish entertainer off it as well, singer Benny Dayal is what one would refer to as a complete package. He has a passionate fan following, a brilliant repertoire of hits and the sort of likeability and charisma that’s needed to be popular in the public space. He’s playing the right cards, musically, and has much to look forward for. One thing the man hadn’t done so far (and now will) is judge a music reality show. He is, along with Shaan, Neeti Mohan and Salim Merchant, one of the coaches of The Voice India Season 2, which airs on &TV next month.

He says he was approached as late as over a month ago. That he always loved the show. And that he religiously watched the US version of the show since Season 1 and followed the format. “It was nice to be finally approached to be a part of the Indian version of the show,” he says.

Keeping it unique

The show involves blind auditions — a judge has to solely judge and turn one’s chair after pressing a buzzer on the basis of vocal quality. What is he looking for? What is going to make him turn his chair and pick his team? “Try to keep everything unique. I’m looking for unpredictability. I’m looking to be blown away by your voice,” is the heads-up he offers to interested participants.

He shares a close association with Neeti Mohan. He admits, “I’m close friends with Neeti. We started out at around the same time. We’ve worked together and have done shows together.”

He’s known for being a sharp and sometimes out-of-the-box dresser. Will that style make a transition to TV? “I’m sure the team is looking at the entire package. Also, as a coach, you get to be what you are, creative and off-the-hook.”

Future prospects

Most contestants disappear after a show ends with very few actually pursuing a career in music. Does he think the show’s format help as a stepping stone of sorts? “Of course, it does help. My good friend Nakash Aziz came from a reality show as did Neeti and Antara Mitra. I was picked from a voice hunt down south. So we’ve all been through the grill of competing and getting somewhere. You have to have a clear vision of your future and what you want from it. And the talent, too! Also, be clear what you want from life,” he says.

Any advice to potential contestants? “Be yourself. Also, I’m the kinda coach who wants to see my team happy!”
