Real Madrid are likely to miss the services of Cristiano Ronaldo at the start of the new season after the star forward suffered a knee injury in the Euro 2016 final against France.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, a scan by the Portuguese medical team indicated that Ronaldo had suffered a medial collateral ligament in his left knee following a tackle from French midfielder Dimitri Payet. Despite trying his best to play on, Ronaldo was forced to leave the pitch in tears just 25 minutes into the match.

As the injury is anticipated to take around four weeks to heal, Ronaldo faces the prospect of missing the European Super Cup against Sevilla on August 9.

The 31-year-old was seen combining with coach Fernando Santos on the sidelines, encouraging and issuing tactical instructions to his teammates to inspire their nation to their first ever international trophy.

After both sides failed to score goals in the regulation time, substitute Eder struck the match-winning goal to propel Portugal to Euro Cup glory.
