As if losing their 33-year-old son Nasir to liver cirrhosis wasn’t enough, the Shaikh family had to undergo another ordeal when officials from Thane Central prison refused to release their elder son, Shamsher, to perform the last rites.

Despite getting a court order on Sunday, the jail authorities delayed Samsher’s release. His family alleged that the authorities demanded a letter from Mantralaya and also hinted at greasing their palms. Samsher was finally released on Tuesday only after a mob of around 150 people gathered outside the prison.

Danish, Shamsher’s brother, said “Nasir’s body was kept in a cold storage at a church in Pydhonie for two days because of the jail authorities.  When we went there on Sunday the officials told us that since it was a holiday they couldn’t release Shamsher.”

On Monday, Danish along with his sister-in-law once again went to the jail but officials refused to cooperate asked them to wait outside. “After waiting for a long time I again approached the jail office to check about the proceedings. An official present there said that I would have to pay Rs50,000 and only then they would allow Shamsher to attend Nasir’s last rites. I tried convincing him but he did not budge and asked us to leave the jail premises immediately,” said Danish

However, jail superintendent Rajesh Chavan claimed that the Shaikh’s were in fact at fault and had failed to pay the fees for the escort team which had to come from Pydhonie to escort Shamsher. “There was confusion as they did not listen to the jail authorities. As for delaying his release, even if there is a court order we cannot let him go if the formalities are not completed,” he said.

The Thane jail authorities have registered a complaint against the mob at the Thane Nagar police station for disrupting law and order.
