Kamaljeet Rajpal, CEO of the Cricket Club of India, who was admitted to Bombay Hospital on Friday evening after being found with a gunshot wound, may have tried to commit suicide, an official of the Cuffe Parade police station said.

According to the official, a medical certificate issued by the hospital on Saturday says the gunshot wound was inside his mouth — a clear indication that it was most likely suicide, and not an accident, as his family suggested earlier. While providing a statement to the Cuffe Parade police earlier in the day, Rajpal’s son Suveer, 27, said the CCI chief had accidentally shot himself while cleaning his pistol.

The official added that the police will try to meet Rajpal himself on Monday, and ascertain the matter, and also file a case of suicide against him. Rajpal is currently under a 48-hour observation at the hospital.

Rajpal may have tried to take his life out of despair and worry about a case he is currently embroiled in, the police said. He has been accused of sending obscene emails to a woman member of the CCI committee. Rajpal was present in the sessions court on Friday afternoon where his case was being heard. After completion of the hearing, additional sessions judge CA Jadhav said he would pass an order on the matter on Monday.

The police said they would also take the statement of the woman who filed the case against Rajpal and her lawyer Robin Jaisinghani. They don’t rule out the possibility of an argument that took place in court, having upset Rajpal.

Rajpal was allegedly sitting and chatting with his wife Rita, daughter Mrinalini, 25, and her friends Nishant Sashidharan and Rohan Dakshini at home a few minutes before the shooting. Rajpal’s daughter and her two friends are all lawyers in the High Court so there is a chance they were discussing the case against Rajpal with him, a police official said.

“We got information from Bombay Hospital at 8.30pm on Friday that Rajpal have been admitted. We reached the hospital while he was being operated upon, and later visited his house, Flat No.92 in Venus Apartment at Cuff Parade. We found one Indian Pistol, 17 live rounds and blood stains on the walls in the room in which the shooting took place,” said Bhole.
