Toppling of a heavy vehicle on Mumbai-Pune Expressway resulted in a massive traffic snarl on Sunday evening making it a nightmare for motorists. Two people were injured due to toppling of the cement concrete mixer.
On Sunday afternoon, two vehicles met with an accident near Khopoli on the Expressway killing one and injuring two others including a child.
At around 6pm, a cement concrete mixer vehicle lost control near Amrutanjan Bridge (off Khandala). "It turned turtle on the median, thereby blocking traffic in either direction; that is towards Mumbai as well as Pune," said an officer from Expressway Control Room.

In order to clear the accident spot it was necessary to block movement of traffic on either direction for an hour. This stoppage of traffic movement resulted in bumper-to-bumper traffic in either direction. Motorists stuck on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway shared that the snarl was as long as 5-8 km.
By Sunday night, all the lanes bound for Mumbai were opened for traffic movement. Whereas for the other direction, one of the lanes was blocked until the heavy vehicle was towed away from the accident spot.
Amrutanjan Bridge is an accident-prone location, particularly for heavy vehicles due to sharp turns, and this despite segregation of lanes for light and heavy vehicles. In the past too, there have been repeated traffic snarls due to accident or breakdowns at Amrutanjan Bridge on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
