Mumbai: Another Tunnel Boring Machine breakthrough for Metro-3 corridor

In another milestone in the construction of the fully underground Metro-3 (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) corridor, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) on Wednesday announced the completion of 20km (38 per cent) of the total tunnelling work for which the civil construction work started around two years ago.

The overall tunnelling length for the 33-km-long Metro corridor is 52-km. On Wednesday, it completed the fifth tunnel breakthrough at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) - T2 Metro station.

SK Gupta, Director (Projects), MMRC said, "We have completed 35 per cent of the overall civil work. Yesterday we witnessed the fifth breakthrough; there will be a total of 32 breakthroughs for tunnelling. The breakthroughs are major milestones for us in the course of the project."

According to a statement issued by MMRC, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) was commissioned on 8 January 2018 from Pali ground at Marol and it has completed its tunnel drive of 1.31-km. This means it bored about 4.2 meters daily. The TBM named- Wainganga 3 broke its way at 4 pm in the backdrop of cheers of 150 engineers, technicians and workers at the site.

The sixth tunnel breakthrough is expected at Sahar Road in the coming days. The civil construction work for Metro-3 is divided into seven packages wherein construction of package 7 that runs from Marol Naka to Seepz via MIDC is of 7.07 km. Around 50 per cent (3.57km) work has been completed till now, MMRC further added in its statement.
