A housing society with 160 flats in Lokhandwala, Kandivali (E), is setting an example in ways to effectively manage waste generated daily. They have also been promoting ways to re-use and re-cycle goods and reduce the carbon footprint.

Residents of Whispering Palms-6 are composting over 100 kg of wet waste generated daily using a fully-automatic composting machine, which was installed in the society on February 22. "Our Chairman, RK Deora, along with the other members of our managing committee have researched extensively to arrive at the most effective and long-term solution to manage wet waste. Since everyone had certain reservations about composting pits, we decided to settle for a hassle-free machine, which generates 10 kg of odourless compost for every 100 kg wet waste," said Seema Agarwal, Secretary of the building. She added that the managing committee even banned the usage of plastic trash bags.

"We thought it would be difficult initially, but our members responded positively and understood that some of our decisions taken purely out of environmental concerns. We held workshops to sensitise the residents and special emphasis was put on teaching the househelps about waste segregation," said Shubhangi Tare, Joint Secretary of the society.

The society has not limited itself to just managing wet waste. "We also have a designated area where bins are installed to discard plastic bottles, tetra packs and e-waste incluidng tube lights. These are sent for re-cycling. There's also a provision to donate old clothes to NGO's," said Agarwal.

Meanwhile, a group of home makers who have set up a cultural committee, developed a 8,000 sq ft recreation ground that has various types of medicinal plants and trees. Children are encouraged to use the water remaining in their bottles to water these plants instead of draining it down a sink. "The garden plays a vital role in encouraging re-use, as discarded items such as cycles, shoes, plastic bottles and containers have been used as decoration or bird feeder. We are also collecting plastic bottles to be used for vertical gardening soon," Agarwal said.
