After Bombay High Court's direction, the state education department recently issued a government resolution (GR) asking all schools in Maharashtra to install CCTV cameras in the school premises in order to protect students.

The growing number of molestation cases with the minors in and outside school premises have forced the state education department to issue the GR. Recently, a girl students was molested at Dadar-based school by the canteen boy. Following this incident, several schools came together and held a meeting with the experts to know what measures can be taken to safeguard students not only in school but in buses as well.

According to the GR, secondary, primary and private management schools have been asked to install the CCTV's in the school. Schools will not be given any funds by the state government stated the GR. The schools have also been directed to ensure that the cameras installed are in working condition and are monitored regularly by school authorities.

The education inspectors have been asked to give the report to the deputy director of school education whether all schools have installed CCTV cameras in their premises. All the divisional deputy directors need to submit this report to the directors. The directors have been asked to visit the schools after six months and submit a report to the state government regarding the installation of CCTV cameras.

Kapil Patil, MLC from teachers constituency, said: "We welcome the move of the state government. But it will be better if the aided schools are provided with the funds as those schools do not charge fees. We hope the education minister will help the schools in this matter."

Vaishali Ghodeswar, a parent whose daughter is in kindergarten, said: "It is a good move and a relief for all parents that government have asked schools to install CCTVs. But the cameras should be regularly monitored."

Sangeeta Srivastava, principal of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Vidyalaya and Junior College Kandivli, said: "We installed CCTV cameras four years ago in our school. After seeing the benefits of it we decided to install it inside classroom and around the campus and playground this year. Just by having CCTVs surveillance unwanted activities can be curbed and it helps create self discipline."
