Just when you think it can’t get any hotter, the mercury has gone up a few notches more. Perspiring already? Don’t worry, there’s a choice of drinks that will surely put you back in a good mood.

Ask Shazahn Padamsee, actor and foodie, on her mantra to beat the heat and she has just one. “I’m addicted to juices,” she announces with a smile. “Summer is for swimming and staying cool and there’s no better way for me to do so than to have my fix of orange and watermelon juices; they have to be fresh though.” Recently in Dubai she enjoyed a special variety. “It was a smoothie with 10 layers of fruits and flavours that you discover as you drink it. It was delicious,” she giggles.

And while you may not be able to get that creative in a glass here yet, there are different ways to indulge in summer therapies.

Quite a variety
Oliver Viegas, restaurant manager, Stax, explains how most people tend to consume aerated drinks to beat the heat but fruit-based ones are a much better alternative.

“Watermelon is the best summer fruit as its high water content cools the body. Watermelon juice not only quenches the thirst but also has a lot of nutritional benefits,” he says. He also says peaches are another good option. “They are low in calories, high in vitamins and fibre, making them an excellent choice for a summer diet.”

Mocktail lovers will enjoy
Pomegranate Fantasy, a delightful blend of sweet pomegranate juice and seeds topped with lime juice and mint leaves by bar manager Devendra Kushwaha of Sahara Star while bartending expert Eric Lobo votes for natural cooling ingredients. “Keeping the hot weather in mind, I’d use mint, kokum and yoghurt,” he states.

Common misconception
“A few people are of the misconception that alcohol should be avoided in summer,” adds Viegas. “But I am of the opinion that it helps you lighten up. Vodka is best suited for fruit-based cocktails as it goes well with a lot of fruit juices and does not kill the flavour of the fruit.”

Home remedies
You can conjure up a few summer antidotes at home too — with lime water, thandai, panna made with raw mangoes, lassi and cold soups. Cheers to that!
