Violent protests rocked parts of Kashmir when people marched against the rape and murder of the eight-year-old tribal nomad girl of Kathua.
From Anantnag to Srinagar, protests turned violent when youth pelted stones on the security forces at a number of places. Forces had to fire coloured water cannons and use smoke shells to disperse the stone pelting mobs in Srinagar and Anantnag districts.
Police said two personnel and two miscreants received injuries when they were hit by stones. All of them are stable.
"On Wednesday morning, a peaceful protest was taken out at Anantnag which was allowed by police and district administration. Subsequently, some miscreants indulged in stone pelting, turning the protest violent, and tried to forcefully shut down the town", said a police spokesman.
Massive clashes rocked the Government Degree College Bemina in Srinagar when students pelted stones on the forces. Police used coloured water cannons to disperse the mob.
Police said miscreants tried to block the main road at Awantipora in south Kashmir. "But due to the timely intervention, the situation was handled and no street vandalism could take place", he said.
Police said miscreants pelted stones during the anti-demolition drive in Pulwama. "When the Municipal Committee Pulwama was busy during an anti-encroachment drive, they were stone-pelted upon to disrupt the process. A police party reached the spot and dispersed the miscreants. No injuries were reported in this incident", he said.
Police clarified that the situation has been brought under control in all locations. "We request citizens not to fall prey to any speculations and rumours which are intended to disturb the peace. And we seek their cooperation to maintain order", said the spokesman.
Peaceful protests and marches were also held in different parts of the valley demanding justice for the little girl. Wearing uniforms, girl students too carried out marches demanding a death penalty for the rapists.
