From journalist to Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, here's all you need to know about Harivansh Narayan Singh

Harivansh Narayan Singh, who was elected to the post of Deputy Vice Chairman in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

He comprehensively defeated BK Hariprasad of Congress. NDA candidate's win became a foregone conclusion after  Navin Patnaik, Odisha chief minister said his party, having 9 votes, decided to vote for Harivansh after Bihar chief minister NItish Kumar called him on Wednesday.

AAP and YSR Congress abstained during the election.

The NDA candidate got 125 votes as it was expected. Opposition candidate was projected to get 111 votes, but only got 105.

Here are five things to know about the new Deputy Chairman

► Harivansh Narayan Singh was born on June 30, 1956 in Ballia district, where Jayaprakash Narayan hails from. He graduated from Banaras Hindu University where he obtained a diploma in journalism.

► Harvansh started his career with Hindi weekly Dharmyug in 1977. But, he then took the banking services exam and joined Bank of India in Hyderabad as an Official Language Officer. In 1981, he shifted to Patna.

► In the 1970s, he was greatly influenced by socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan. One of his teachers recalls how he would always have a question.

► He took a break from journalism between 1981 and 1984 where he worked in Bank of India in Hyderabad and Patna. In 1984, he returned to journalism and was an assistant editor in a weekly magazine published by Anant Bazaar Patrika until 1988

► Harivansh joined Prabhat Khabar in Ranchi in 1989 and rose to become its editor-in-chief. He quit the daily after becoming a Rajya Sabha member in 2014.

► "Working closely with Chandra Shekhar Ji, Harivansh Ji knew in advance that Chandra Shekhar Ji would resign. However, he did not let his own paper have access to this news. This shows his commitment to ethics and public service," said PM Modi while congratulating him.
