With great power comes great responsibility! But in Shahid Kapoor’s case, it seems that the great responsibility has come with a great beard! The actor, who was once known for his chocolate-boy looks, has soon emerged as the poster boy of facial fuzz among the current crop of Bollywood heroes.

While he started his career as a clean-shaven guy in his first film, Ishq Vishk (2003), he has consequently played a number of roles where he was required to sport bristles. And he did that with aplomb!

Whether it was Haider (2014), where he displayed close-cropped mane as well as a well-trimmed beard, or Udta Punjab (2016) where his rockstar character required him to sport long locks and a thick fuzz to go with his perfectly toned abs — Shahid’s facial hair was a talking point. For his role as Maharawal Ratan Singh in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmaavat (2018), it took the actor almost four months to grow the long moustache and beard required for the regal avatar. He sports different looks in his upcoming film Kabir Singh — including a clean-shaven one — but it is the one where he showcases a burly hipster beard, which had the netizens falling in love with his rugged avatar.

The 38-year-old, who clearly enjoys sporting the five o’ clock shadow, says, “I’ve got into the grooming game and I feel it’s an extension of me. Usually, I just use a brush and a comb to keep it in shape and some nice beard oil once in a while to keep it healthy. Sporting a beard is very masculine, I do enjoy it.” Quiz him which has been his favourite appearance and he replies, “It has to be Kabir Singh. I really like it because it’s so raw and dishevelled. I just grew out my hair and beard like I don’t give a s**t. It was liberating!” he laughs.
