BANGALORE
banIn 2010-11, the BBMP chopped 631 trees and the BDA uprooted 530 of them for the construction of various infrastructures like underpasses, flyovers, road widening and layouts.
What is the price to pay for Bangalore’s development? As far as the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) are concerned, it is the death of 1,161 good old trees.
In 2010-11, the BBMP chopped 631 trees and the BDA uprooted 530 of them for the construction of various infrastructures like underpasses, flyovers, road widening and layouts.
The state government gave these statistics to the legislative council on Thursday, as a response to the question raised by actor Jaggesh, who is also the member of the House.
Civic bodies, however, are claiming that the greenery lost would be regained. For every tree that was chopped, a new sapling would be planted, they promised. Even if that were to happen, it will take a long while. The cost incurred would also be high.
The BBMP said that last year, it had planted 3,13,048 saplings in different parts of the city at a cost of Rs7.13 crore. It also said that Rs4.73 crore has been kept aside for the maintenance.
Similarly, the BDA stated that it had planted 1,32,950 saplings and Rs64 lakh has been spent for the same. It would take `2.5 crore for maintenance.
A rough calculation shows that a total cost of Rs15 crore would be spent by both civic bodies to regain the city’s former glory and greenery. However, there is no guarantee that it would be a reality.
