The number of people who have tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Mumbai's Dharavi area has now reached 22, as five more persons from the slum tested positive for the virus infection here, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) informed in a statement on Friday.

The civic body of the Greater Mumbai area also stated that out of the five new COVID-19 cases in Dharavi, three are male patients and two are female. These cases were reported from the areas of the PMGP colony, Muslim Nagar, Kalyanwadi and Murugan Chawl.

Dharavi is a locality in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, considered to be one of the world's largest slums.

Two more persons who were associated with the Tablighi Jamaat event at Delhi's Nizamuddin Markaz mosque earlier last month have recently tested positive for COVID-19 in Maharashtra, the police have informed. The duo was already quarantined at Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex and is now being shifted to the hospital.

Even outside of Dharavi, the city of Mumbai remains adversely affected by the virus outbreak. The number of COVID-19 affected individuals in the Dadar area reached six on this day as three persons, including two nurses and a man, tested positive for coronavirus, Maharashtra health officials said on Friday.

"As many three new cases of the novel coronavirus was reported from Dadar, in south Mumbai on Friday. Two nurses of Shushrusha Hospital and a man from Kelkar Road tested positive for COVID-19. The total number of cases in Dadar is now at six," they said.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, a total of 1,380 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Maharashtra so far, as 16 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the state on this day

As the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak continues to spread like wildfire across India, the central government is amping up efforts to build medical centers, quarantine units and continue with surveillance and tracing contacts. Friday marks Day 17 of the 21-day COVID-19 lockdown implemented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 24.

According to data provided by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, 547 new cases and 30 deaths were reported in the last 12 hours. Maharashtra is the worst-hit state in the country, followed by Tamil Nadu.
