The India women’s cricket team has not played any form of cricket ever since the end of the ICC Women’s World T20 in March. India reached the final of the ICC Women’s World T20 for the first time but they were undone by the brilliance of Alyssa Healy, Beth Mooney and an Australian team backed by a capacity crowd of 86000 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as Australia won the World T20 for the fifth time with a big win.

However, ever since the coronavirus pandemic, the Indian cricket team has not played any cricket. They were supposed to tour England for a tri-series involving South Africa but that was cancelled as the Indian team did not get the travel clearances. Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, only two series has taken place involving England vs West Indies in Derby as well as the Australia vs New Zealand women’s T20I and ODI series in Allan Border field in Brisbane.

Despite the long lay-off, the likes of Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and Shafali Verma have held on to their top 10 rankings in the world when it comes to Women’s Twenty20 Internationals. Shafali Verma is the highest ranked Indian batter at the third spot, Mandhana and Rodrigues have also been able to hold their respective seventh and ninth places in the list led by Australias Beth Mooney. In the bowlers’ rankings, Deepti Sharma remains the highest ranked Indian, currently occupying the sixth spot. She is followed by Radha Yadav and Poonam Yadav at seventh and eighth places respectively. Among all-rounders, Deepti Sharma remains the only Indian in top 10, currently placed at the fourth spot.

Impressive in the World T20

Shafali Verma, the youngster from Haryana, impressed everybody with her power hitting and aggressive batting as she gave the Indian women’s cricket team a fast start in all the games. It was her aggression and Poonam Yadav’s sensational spell that gave India a big win against Australia in the opening game of the ICC World T20.

In the entire ICC World T20 tournament, Shafali Verma managed 163 runs at an average of 32 but with a strike-rate of 158. The women’s team might see some action in November as the T20 Challenger series might take place in the UAE from November 4 to November 9, with four teams playing on the sidelines of IPL 2020.
