The Nashik District Central Co-operative Bank has become the target of thieves for the fifth time. This time it was the Yeola branch which reported a case of theft on Tuesday.

According to the police, the theft came to light when the staff of the branch in Jalgaon village in Yeola tehsil came to the bank in the morning. The police was informed immediately.

This is the fifth robbery in the recent past, where the branches of NDCC bank have been looted and in a similar manner by cutting the window bars and then breaking the vault.

The police stated that the theft took place in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday and the miscreants have used gas cutters to cut the bars of the window to enter the bank. Rs17 lakh has been looted.

Earlier, similar cases of thefts were reported at Ranwad in Niphad where gold worth Rs14 lakh was looted, at Nimon in Chandwad where Rs19 lakh were looted, at Andersool in Yeola where Rs50 lakh were looted while it was being transported in a rickshaw and at Dapur in Sinnar where Rs25 lakh was looted.

In almost all the cases, gas cutters were used to break open the windows to get to the vault.

"We do not understand why NDCC bank is being targeted. We have taken serious cognisance of these thefts. In our meetings we have passed resolutions to strengthen the security of all the 213 branches of the NDCC bank all over the district. All the branches are now being equipped with CCTV cameras and we are appointing day and night security guards. Incidentally, the material for the CCTV was brought to the Jalgaon branch on October 5 evening and the theft took place before it was fitted," stated Narendra Darade, president of NDCC bank.

He also said that most of the branches of the bank in the rural areas are away from the main towns or villages. The thieves have taken advantage of these remote locations. "We made this observation in the meeting and had proposed to shift such remotely-located branches. However, not all members agreed to it and hence a decision on that issue was not taken. But now we will have to consider it again," stated Darade.

Darade also said that there are many problems related to such thefts. "The internet connection of BSNL does not support many a times; all transactions in the banks are online and when transactions can't take place cash lies in the bank valuts", Darade stated.
