Mumbai police made me travel unnecessarily: Activist Debi Goenka

After travelling more than 800 kms and 23 hours to get back his stolen car, the environmentalist Debi Goenka returned empty hand. The activist’s Scorpio was stolen two weeks ago from his residence in Hiranandani Gardens, Powai.

“I generally park the vehicle in my building compound. On December 6 the vehicle was missing. On December 18, the Powai police station informed me of my car being in Rajasthan and told me I have to go there to get my car,” said Goenka.

According to the Powai police, the Rajasthan police had caught three men with weapons and during interrogation they found that the vehicle was stolen from Powai. Goenka along with a police sub-inspector and two constables and driver left for Rajasthan on December 21.

Goenka volunteered to drive the Powai police all the way to Rajasthan after they told him his presence was compulsory in the Rajasthan court.

“Being a holiday season, getting an air ticket or train ticket was not possible so we drove to the court of judicial magistrate, Jalore. After reaching there, I was told by the Rajasthan police that my presence was not necessary and only the Powai police were required,” said Goenka.

Goenka further added, “I wasted three days doing nothing. I didn't even get my car. I have complained the senior police officer about API Ms Kodge for misinforming me and forcing me to travel all the way to Rajasthan. Once in Mumbai, I will file a written complaint against her with Mumbai police commissioner.” Vehicle theft has been a recurring problem in Hiranandani Powai. “The car thefts have increased in last few years and the police has done nothing to stop it. At least they should alert the residents so that we can do something about it. Hiranandani itself has its own security. It can be roped in for stopping the car theft,” said Goenka.

Ashok Jadhav, senior police inspector, Powai police station said, “The vehicle was traced to Rajasthan. Our policemen had accompanied Goenka. Vehicle theft has been a problem in the area. We are working on stopping it.” However he refused to comment on why Goenka was forced to travel all the way to Rajasthan when it was not required.
