An underpass and an air-cooled waiting area is expected to help ease the difficulties of patients arriving at the largest tertiary medical care centre of the state, the SMS Hospital.

The two new facilities were dedicated to public use on Thursday by chief minister Vasundhara Raje. She also inaugurated a CCTV monitoring centre at the hospital and laid the foundation stone of an intensive care unit at trauma centre.

The new waiting area and registration area will be air-cooled and is designed to accommodate large number of patients arriving at the hospital each day. There shall be 30 registration counters and a seating area for 100 at the centre.

Inauguration of the 34-meter long underpass connecting the trauma centre with main building of the hospital will also ensure safe and convenient movement of patients and their attendants. The trauma centre and main building are situated on either side of Tonk Road that remains busy for most part of the day. The underpass will save patients from the efforts of braving traffic to cross the road.

“It’s a matter of delight that the underpass has been completed before scheduled time,” chief minister Vasundhara Raje said while appreciating the quality construction of the underpass at a cost of Rs 15 crore in less than a year’s time. The venture has not only benefit the hospital and patients, it has also been a profitable deal for the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA). The authority to have developed the underpass has also provisioned space for 22 shops.

These shops are sought after by many of the pharmaceutical and surgery equipment traders. An auction of just five of these shops yielded for the authority nearly the entire project cost. The authority is expected to earn nearly 5 times its investment from auction of the shops.
