Meet Oncologist Dr. Ravi Kannan, one of the recipients of the Padma Shri Award 2020, who treats cancer patients for free.

A few days back we shared with you a story of an orange seller who won Padma Shri award for is giving free education to children. And now here's another inspiring story.
Meet Oncologist Dr. Ravi Kannan, one of the recipients of the Padma Shri Award 2020, who treats cancer patients for free.
Dr. Ravi Kannan runs the Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Silchar that caters to people from all socio-economic backgrounds and has been conferred with the Padma Shri award in the category of medicine.
He has treated almost treated 7000 patients without taking a single penny from them. Besides providing free treatment to cancer patients, the hospital also provides accommodation, food, and employment.
Originally from Chennai, Dr. Kannan moved to Assam with his family in 2007 to provide basic healthcare facilities for the people of Barak Valley with his Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Silchar.
Ravi Kannan is a surgical oncologist from Chennai who has treated over 70,000 cancer patients free of cost in Barak valley. Treatment includes accommodation, food, employment & spreading awareness. While talking to ANI, Dr. Kannan said, "I shifted to Assam from Chennai (Tamil Nadu) in 2007. It is all due to the teamwork of 350 individuals who work at the hospital. I think, if the progress made in Science does not reach the common man, then it is a failure of the system".

This year's awardees comprise seven Padma Vibhushan, 16 Padma Bhushan and 118 Padma Shri recipients.
