The polling for 89 Lok Sabha seats spread over seven states and two Union Territories, which went to polls saw high voter turnout as people fought the scorching heat to exercise their right.
Huge improvement in voting%age was recorded in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.
In Gujarat, polling was done for 26 seats with 412 candidates contesting the elections. The voter turnout was recorded to be 62% as compared to 47.89% in 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
In Andhra Pradesh, polling was done for 17 seats with 265 candidates in the fray. The voter turnout was recorded to be 70% as compared to 67.71% in 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
Polling was also done 119 assembly constituencies in Andhra.
In Uttar Pradesh, polling was done for 14 seats with 233 candidates contesting the elections. The voter turnout was recorded to be 57.10% as compared to 47.99% in 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
In Punjab, polling was done for all 13 seats with 253 candidates contesting the elections. The voter turnout was recorded to be 73% as compared to 70.04% in 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
The EC also informed that in Punjab's Patiala rural constituency, two people allegedly snatched an EVM and broke its control unit. An FIR has been lodged and the police will soon arrest the culprits.
In West Bengal, polling was done for nine seats, covering five districts, with 87 candidates contesting the elections. The voter turnout was recorded to be 81.35%, which is expected to reach 83%, as compared to 81.91% in 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
In Jammu and Kashmir, voting was conducted on only one seat with 14 candidates in fray. The voter turnout was recorded at a meager 25.62% as compared to almost same figure of 25.49% in 2009 Lok Sabha elections. Barring incidents of stone pelting, the polling was peaceful in the valley.
In Dadra and Nagar Haveli also, voting was conducted on only one seat with 11 candidates in fray. The voter turnout was recorded at 85% as compared to 73.26% in 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
In Daman and Diu, voting was conducted on only one seat with four candidates in fray. The voter turnout was recorded at 76% as compared to 72.69% in 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
The Election Commission also informed that as of now polls have been completed on 438 Lok Sabha seats with 44 crore voters exercising their right. The national voter turnout for these seats stands at 66.20% as against 57.61% in 2009.
