IMD has said that maximum temperature is expected to exceed the 30 degrees Celsius mark again between February 13 and February 21.
The temperature in the national capital touched the 30 degree Celsius mark in early February for the first time in 15 years, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. According to the IMD's data, maximum temperature last crossed 30 degree Celsius in the first half of February 2006.
And as winters come to a close in Delhi, the forecast for temperatures is to rise for most of the month.
According to the data published by IMD, the maximum temperature recorded at the Safdarjung weather station, which is considered to be the official marker of the city, on Wednesday (February 10) was 30.4 degree Celsius, seven degrees above the season's normal temperature.
Meteorologists say that the initial rise in temperature was neither unusual nor does it imply an abnormally warm month or the arrival of summers.
The maximum temperature on Thursday had dipped to 26.1 degree Celsius, three degrees above the season's normal. IMD, however, has said that maximum temperature is expected to exceed the 30 degrees Celsius mark again between February 13 and February 21.
Kuldeep Srivastava of the IMD said, "The exact picture of whether this could feature in the list of warmest February months will have to be seen once we take the MMTs (mean maximum/minimum temperatures) into account," reported Hindustan Times.
"There were clear skies over Delhi on Wednesday, and winds were blowing from the south-west. Winds from this direction are generally warmer, which impacted the temperature,” Srivastava added.
According to IMD records, the mean maximum temperature for February is 23.9°C, and the mean minimum is 10.4°C.
Meanwhile, pollution levels have been on a steady rise in the NCR region as Delhi woke up to foggy Friday morning. The Air Quality Index (AQI) as of 1 PM on Friday stood at 483, in the 'hazardous" zone. The maximum temperature is predicted to be at 27 degrees Celsius, a notch higher than Thursday while the minimum temperature is likely to be at 10 degrees Celsius.
