The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has finally budged and have agreed to meet Thane housing societies to discuss the solid waste management issue. The harried residents have been trying to get a date with the TMC officials who woke up a week before the deadline given to residents to compost waste was about to expire. The civic body, through a letter, had invited Thane Citizens Foundation (an apex body of over 700 housing societies in Thane) for a meeting. However, it forgot to mention the date and time for the meeting.

On October 31, TMC's deadline given to bigger housing societies in Thane to manage their own garbage was about to end. From November 1, Thane societies that are 5,000 square metre in area and larger had to manage their own garbage. This has been a bone of contention between the Thane housing societies and the TMC. The societies claimed that they are neither equipped with knowledge and expertise nor space to manage their solid waste.

The residents showed their readiness to share TMC's responsibility and tried getting a date with the commissioner as well as the concerned officials since July to discuss the issue. Though the TMC extended the deadline thrice, and the fourth extension is likely to follow in November, it refrained from holding a dialogue with the citizens.

Finally when the residents threatened to move the high court against the civic body for dumping its responsibility on the citizens, that the TMC blinked. "TMC sent us a letter last week inviting us to discuss solid waste management," said a member of Thane Citizens Foundation. "But it didn't mention the date and time in the letter," he added.

When contacted Ashok Burpulle, deputy municipal commissioner - solid waste management, TMC, he said that the residents can meet him during office hours. "They can come and meet us any time during office hours," says he.
