A unique dispute is brewing in Betul, Madhya Pradesh. People might have heard about disputes over land and property among families. But here, two villages are facing-off over idols of deities and a temple.

The issue reached such an extent that people of one village boycotted the other. There was a ban imposed on purchase of water, milk, curd, and all the other items of daily use from the village. Even children were not allowed to enter the schools in the opposite village.

As the dispute has been escalating, the administration and city police have intervened to resolve it and asked have villagers to settle the issue as soon as possible.

The conflict began after the emergence of the Parasdoh Dam on the river Tapti.

The two villages, Kutkheri and Pouni, are situated on the banks of this river. However, as the river started overflow, its surrounding areas also started getting inundated.

What Transpired

The conflict began after the emergence of the Parasdoh Dam on the river Tapti. The overflowing river has started inundating a temple in Kutkheri
Much to the chagrin of Kutkheri villagers, residents of Pouni removed the idols from the temple. This has led to the ongoing conflict

For many years now, during the event of Kartik Purnima, the Tapti Triveni Shravan Tirtha — a religious event — is organised at Kutkheri village. The village administration spent lakhs of rupees and built a temple for the event. And now, due to the overflowing river, the temple has started to flood.

As the temple started getting submerged, the residents of Pouni decided to shift the idols from the temple to their own village. They even demanded that the temple be shifted to a better location as it will always be flooded due to the dam.

This caused distress among the villagers of Kutkheri and they boycotted the village of Pouni.

After this, a complaint reached the administration. Both villages are now trying to settle the conflict.

Police have also tried to mediate in the matter by sending a team to conduct a meeting among both the villages and have asked the residents of Kutkheri village to end the boycott and settle the dispute with mutual consent.
