Tribal girl student's body found hanging from tree

Body of a girl student who belonged to Bonda tribe was found hanging from a tree in the hostel premises of Khairaput high school in Malkangiri district today, district officials said.

The tribe is among the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) in Odisha.

District Education Officer (DEO) Prasant Kumar Mohapatra said the girl, identified as Sukri Dhadenga Majhi, a class VIII student of the school and a resident of Bandhaguda area in Bonda Ghati, stayed in the state run hostel.

Malkangiri District Collector K Sudarshan Chakraborty has directed the district welfare officer to rush to the school and look into the circumstances.

Asked about possibility of suicide, the DEO said, "We have been told the girl had some mental problems which could be the cause of the incident."
