Launching an all-out attack on the BJP and the Sangh Pariwar, Congress President Rahul Gandhi said that when Hindutva icon Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was pleading with the British "with folded hands," Congress leaders and activists were serving time in jail.

While addressing Congress workers in Goregaon on Tuesday, Gandhi claimed that after its close victory in Gujarat and reverses in Karnataka, the BJP would be wiped out in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh elections due later this year. The Congress chief also compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi with economic fugitives like Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya.

"Nirav Modi ran away with Rs 35,000 crore, (Vijay) Mallya took off with Rs 9,000 crore, Lalit Modi too fled, voh (Narendra Modi) bhi bhag jaayenge (even Modi will run away)," he retorted, while reacting to a worker who took the Prime Minister's name.

"When Savarkarji was writing letters, no, (correcting himself) when he was seeking pardon with folded hands, (saying) mujhe maaf kar do (please forgive me), the Congress party's workers and leaders were serving time in jail, some for 15 years, some for 20 years, and some for (even) 25 years," said Gandhi.

"Our people have given a kurbani (sacrifice). Why did we make this sacrifice? To make Hindustan, to bring people together," he added, stating that the new Congress headquarters in New Delhi would have a wall with details of party workers who had been martyred or jailed.

Gandhi accused Modi of neglecting his erstwhile guru (mentor) and BJP patriarch LK Advani and added that despite being political adversaries, he (Gandhi) ensured that Advani's esteem was retained in events like those organised in the Parliament.

"It is only one force that can protect the farmers and give employment to the youth, that is the Congress party," said Gandhi, who began his speech in Marathi and was hailed by Congress leaders who spoke before him as the "future Prime Minister."
