In what can be described as a shocking lack of responsibility from an elected member of the highest seat of democracy, senior NCP leader Supriya Sule was caught riding pillion without a helmet in Mumbai. Even the person riding the bike was not wearing a helmet.

Sule was going from one campaign stop at Malad, in suburban Mumbai to Thane. She was busy canvassing for her party candidates for the upcoming municipality elections.

Sule decided to cut time by opting for going by a bike, and travelled like a commoner, something which is definitely praiseworthy. But while doing so, the MP made a mistake of not wearing a helmet, which is a traffic violation in Mumbai as per directions given by Mumbai police in April last year. Violators are liable to pay a fine of Rs 100.

As per this DNA report, the state Transport department had on February 6 2016, issuing a circular to this effect as per the orders of the Bombay High Court. Regional Transport Offices (RTO) were also directed to ask dealers to produce the proof of supplying two helmets to the rider at the time of registration, besides other documents.

Well we are sure that Sule must have forgotten about the rule amidst hurry of reaching the next campaign stop. However, it definitely sends a wrong message to the youngsters who may indulge in rash driving. Although we should probably cut Sule some slack as she hails from Pune, where riders wearing a helmet is not exactly common place, forget the pillion!
