Mumbai: Wear helmets or face action, pillion riders warned

The next time you take your friend or family member pillion on your bike across Mumbai, make sure they wear a helmet too. For the safety of two-wheeler riders as well as pillion riders, the Mumbai Traffic Police has now made wearing helmet compulsory. Failure to do so will incur a fine of Rs 100. 

According to a police circular, the transport department and the traffic police of Mumbai have already begun cracking the whip since Friday, April 29, to implement the government's new notification on traffic violations.

Here's a list of fines for traffic violators.

The same rule is also applied to those caught driving a four-wheeler without a seat belt and a penalty fine of Rs 100 will be levied. The police have also clarified that strict action will be taken on those who violate the rules.

The state Transport department had on February 6, issuing a circular to this effect as per the orders of the Bombay High Court. Regional Transport Offices (RTO) were also directed to ask dealers to produce the proof of supplying two helmets to the rider at the time of registration, besides other documents. 

Earlier, raising the issue, transport minister Diwakar Raote said wearing a helmet will be made mandatory across Maharashtra and those found not complying, will have to attend a compulsory two-hour counselling session.
