A team of doctors at the city-based NM Wadia Institute of Cardiology has given a fresh lease of life to a 9-month-old suffering from complicated congenital heart disease.

Milind, son of a daily wage labourer, Shahadev Dahiphale of Ahmednagar, underwent an open heart surgery at the hospital one-and-a-half-months ago.

Usually such surgeries cost about Rs3 lakh, but the NM Wadia Institute of Cardiology did not charge a penny. Milind weighed only 5 kg when he was nine months old because of the congenital heart disease.

He was diagnosed with the disease by Dr Manoj Durairaj, a cardiac surgeon of the hospital, during a medical camp in Ahmednagar.

“When I saw Milind his complexion was bluish. His was a complex case which needed immediate attention. We convinced his parents to bring him to our hospital for treatment. We consulted Dr SMS Modi, chief cardiologist at the hospital, who confirmed that the baby was suffering from congenital heart disease.”

The doctors explained that in this disease the connection between the heart and the lungs is disturbed and the heart does not receive the oxygenated blood from the lungs, thus giving the blue colour to Milind’s body.

Dr Anil Katdare, medical director of the institute, said that Milind’s case was even more complex as the baby had high lung pressure that was detrimental in the operative procedure. “This meant the operation was complex and so was the post-operative care. In such cases 80% of the babies die within the first year,” he added.

After the operation the dedicated staff and nurses of the institute took proper care of the child that resulted in his speedy recovery. He gained weight by about 800 gm in
45 days.

Anaesthetist Dr Kiran Khanvelkar said special gases were needed for the child who was underweight and also had high lung pressure. The rare surgery required the baby’s body temperature to be brought down to 18 degrees Celsius.

Shahadev expressed his gratitude towards the institute and its doctors for giving a new lease of life to his son. “The hospital took complete care of my child and I did not have to spend a single penny. They operated upon him and I am more than happy to see my child in good health. I do not even need to pay for the medicines as the hospital has provided us with them too.”

Milind is brought to the institute every two weeks for check-ups. The NM Wadia Institute has performed about 30 such complex surgeries till date and handles about five to six such cases every year.
