For the first time in the history, Shiv Sena’s saffron will be flagged in the Muslim pockets of Bandra East area. Defeating the Congress candidate by 200 votes, 35-year-old Mohammed Halim Khan won the seats with 19,035 votes.

The Sena’s new corporator for Bandra’s Behramnagar and Garib Nagar slums is happy to create history for the first time as the party has never won that seat before.

Mohammed Halim Khan said, “I am thankful to Shiv Sena supremo Uddhav Thackeray for trusting me and giving me the ticket for ward 96. I joined All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) 18 months ago but they rejected me because of which I finally joined Sena. This was my first time contesting in a corporator election. I will make sure that the votes given by people will be utilised for making the ward a better area.”

Mohammed Halim Khan defeated Congress candidate Kader Mohammed Sharif Hayat Umar.

Areas in ward 96 include Garib Nagar, Behram Nagar, pipeline, Babuji stall and BMC colony. “Shiv Sena never got more than 300 votes in this ward earlier but this time we finally won,” said Khan.

“We are happy to see our candidate won the election. We supported him even after he shifted political parties,” said party worker Sohail Qureshi.

Another party worker, Anand Parab, said, “We worked day and night to make him win in this ward. It is a great feeling to be part of this history. We will soon be organising a rally to celebrate our victory.”

Around 765 voters opted for NOTA in ward 96.
