Iran has expressed "outrage" over US allegations of a plan to kill the Saudi ambassador to Washington, saying the claims are "politically-motivated" American "evil plot", in a complaint sent to the UN chief.

Iran's Permanent Representative to the UN Mohammad Khazaee conveyed Tehran's strong and categorical rejection of "these fabricated and baseless allegations based on the suspicious claims by an individual" in a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.

Iran "categorically and in the strongest terms condemns this shameful allegation by the United States authorities and deplores it as a well-thought evil plot in line with their anti-Iranian policy to divert attention from the current economic and social problems at home," Khazaee said in the letter, copies of which were simultaneously sent to President of the Security Council and of the General Assembly.

US authorities claimed they had uncovered a plot by the Iranian government to kill Saudi envoy Adel al-Jubeir.

Khazaee said the US allegation that two persons conspired with the Iranian government to carry out terror attacks in the US and assassinate Saudi Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir is "obviously a politically-motivated move and a showcase of its long-standing animosity towards the Iranian nation."

The Iranian envoy said any country accusing others through fabricated stories would set a dangerous precedent in the relations among States.

"The Iranian nation seeks a world free from terrorism and considers the current US warmongering and propaganda machine against Iran as a threat not just against itself but to the peace and stability in the Persian Gulf region," he said.

"Iran warns against the implications of this horrible scenario and submits that the continuation of such divide-and-rule policies could have detrimental effects on peace and security," he said in the letter.

Noting that Iran has always condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, Khazaee said his country too has been a victim of terrorism, with a number of Iranian nuclear scientists killed in the past two years in assassination plots carried out by the Zionist regime and "supported by the US."

Iran is determined to maintain friendly relations with all regional countries, particularly with its Muslim neighbors, and urges all to be "vigilant against the vicious campaigns targeting stability and peace and friendly relations among States in our region."

Khazaee said as UN Secretary-General, Ban has an "important responsibility in enlightening the international public opinion about the dangerous consequences of warmongering policies of the United States Government on international peace and security."
