Doctors in a Karachi hospital have successfully removed the extra limbs of a baby boy who was born with six legs.

The operation lasted for about two hours, and the baby is now in stable condition, doctors at the National Institute of Child Health (NICH) in Karachi said on Thursday.

The baby was born to the wife of an X-ray technician a week ago, Geo TV reported.

A doctor requesting anonymity said the extra limbs were the result of a genetic disease.

"The doctors are examining the infant to plan for necessary treatment to ensure he lives a normal life," the Sindh provincial health department said in a statement.

Imran Shaikh, the baby's father, said he was grateful his son was being treated. "We are a poor family. I am thankful to the government for helping us," he told media.
