After taking over as the prime minister for his second term, Maldives will be the first country Narendra Modi will be visiting. This has also been reported by the Maldivian media. According to Raajje TV, a local news channel in the Maldives, "Modi is expected to visit the Maldives from 7-8 June."

Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had called PM Modi on May 23 to congratulate him on his re-election.

Remember, in his first tenure as the prime minister, Narendra Modi's first visit was to Bhutan in June 2014.

There have been a number of high-level visits between the two countries since the new government under President Solih took over in November 2018. Modi was present during the swearing-in ceremony of President Solih in November 2018, followed by visits of Maldivian Foreign minister Abdulla Shahid and President Solih had that year itself.

During External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's March visit to the Maldives, India announced 100 million Maldivian rufiyaa grant aid.

Last week, it was announced by the Maldives, as part of the grant, that India will be building two projects in the country - a Police Academy in Dhaalu Atoll and a Convention Centre in Ukulhas, Alif Alif Atoll. The total cost of both the projects will be 14.8 million Maldivian rufiyaas or US $960,000.

The Maldives is a key country in the Indian Ocean region and lies in the heart of busy shipping lanes connecting Africa with Asia. The previous administration under President Abdulla Yameen focused on pro-china policy instead of "India first" policy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have seven scheduled foreign visits in the next seven months. These include Maldives, Kyrgyzstan, Japan, France, Russia, Thailand and Brazil. The visits will see him interact with global leaders and see a consolidation of his foreign policy actions and gains from his first term.

He will visit Kyrgyzstan for the SCO Summit, Japan for the G20 summit, France for the G7 summit, Russia for the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), Thailand for the East Asia Summit and Brazil for the BRICS summit.
