In an incident that occured on last Monday, Hong Kong police had used tear gas and pepper spray on the protestors demanding pro-democracy. This action received negative backlash on social media as protestors and social media users criticised Hong Kong Police for their actions against civilians.

To clear these allegations, in a press conference on Tuesday, Hui Chun-tak, Hong Kong Chief Superintendent of police of public relations, took the time to address the false accusations made through social media that the police who have been working around the clock are not doing their job thoroughly.

“I note on social media, people have uploaded certain misleading and discriminatory video clips, alleging the police are not carrying out their duties properly,” Hui said. “These misleading video clips in the social media are extremely unfair to our officers performing their duties diligently on the frontline," he said.

“I emphasise, routine and effective police deployment is crucial to maintaining public order and preserving social stability,” he further added.

Ultimately, Hui emphasises that the duties of the police are what they’ve always been which is “to prevent crimes and to protect life and property".

Hong Kong police further urged protesters in an another press conference held on Wednesday demanding pro-democracy to leave peacefully so that life can return to normal and order can be restored as the district of Mong Kok is becoming a "high risk area".

Although the crowds have dwindled in the past few days, people in Hong Kong are still becoming increasingly confrontational which is giving rise to escalating violence as well as using obstacles to block the roads.

Hui said, “The very few protesters occupying extensive area on the roads are very irrational.”

“I appeal the people unlawfully gathering at the locations to remove the obstacles as soon as possible, and leave.” he added

Along with the worry of the escalating violence police are also concerned about the surrounding neighbourhoods affected by the turmoil .

Hui said, "It has already caused grievances among the residents and directly affected the local business."

“I hope the protesters, while expressing their demands, would also consider the needs of the local residents and respect the rights of other road users. It is with this intention that I hope the protesters could remove the obstacles as soon as possible,” he added.

Regardless of what people’s views maybe, the police are just trying to bring order to Hong Kong’s chaotic streets due to the recalcitrant conduct going on its 12th day.
