China on a red alert for super typhoon Chan-Hom

China is on a high alert for super typhoon Chan-Hom. Thousands of people have been evacuated on July 10 from China's eastern province, Zhejiang. 

The National Meteorological Center issued a red alert, the highest, for Chan-Hom whose centre was spotted 550 kilometers southeast off the coast of Zhejiang province at 5 am on July 10. In Zhejiang, more than 10,000 people have been evacuated and 10,000 fishing vessels have returned to harbour for shelter, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The Fujian provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters ordered all people on coastal fishing farms in Ningde, Fuzhou, Pingtan and Putian to be displaced by 10 am.

The super typhoon Chan-Hom is said to be approaching with a wind speed of up to 187 kilometres per hour and is expected to make a landfall on Friday night or early Saturday morning between the coastal areas of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces.

On July 9, Typhoon Linfa caused a landfall in the southern Guangdong province, bringing torrential rain to the coastal area. Although, no casualties have been reported.
