In what was the most thrilling encounter of the opening day of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, last editions runner-up Mali were shocked by Paraguay 2-3 at the DY Patil Stadium on Friday.

A goal each from Antonio Galeano (12th), , (17th) and Alan Rodriguez (55th) saw the South American nation romp home to an exciting win. Meanwhile, Hadji Drame (20th) and Lassana N'Diaye (34) net apiece for the losers.

It was an entertaining match as the two teams netted four goals in the first 35 minutes of the play. While Paraguay scored the first two in the span of five minutes, Mali made a strong comeback to equalise in a span of 14 minutes.

Even though the scoreline may look in favour of Paraguay, it was Mali who stole the show displaying their skills, power and pace. It was inspiring the way they fought back. N Diaye's powerful strike was the most attractive of the lot that he shot through his left foot which left the Paraguay custodian Diego Huesca leaving all stretched.

However, it was Rodriguez strike in the second half that sealed the deal for Paraguay. The mid-fielder converted a penalty in the 55th minute that gave them the lead. If not for a hand ball from Mali's Abdoulaye Diaby in penalty area, Paraguay's quest would have continued.
