Sunil Chetri is set to become the second India footballer to play overseas after Baichung Bhutia, with the striker nearing a deal with USA’s Major League Soccer club Kansas City Wizards.

The Delhi lad appeared for trials at the club earlier this month and it is believed that Chetri will join the American club in a couple of weeks’ time and be a part of their campaign, which begins next month.

Last year, Chetri appeared for trials at English Championship side Coventry City but couldn’t manage to make a permanent move. He was also denied work permit to join another Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers because of India’s FIFA ranking.

While talks are still going on between Chetri and Kansas, an official confirmation is expected in a few days. Official announcement of the deal will be made in a couple of days, sources said.

If the deal actually happens, then the 25-year-old would no longer take part in the I-League. It is also reported that Dempo will released Chetri from his contract as he had the clause saying that he may quit the club anytime if gets a foreign offer.
