Avijit Thakur of Santacruz’s RN Poddar School is a die-hard Manchester United fan. And when he, along with few teammates, was compelled to sport the well known red jersey it was actually a dream come true for them. The reason being their school jerseys were not ready in time.

Santacruz school won their first match of the season on Monday after a 1-1 draw in their last game. Now, they got the better of Greenlawns School, Worli, by a convincing 3-0 margin in the boys U-16 Division III tie of MSSA Inter-School football tournament at the MSSA ground, Azad Maidan, on Monday.

Fourteen-year-old Thakur was instrumental in his team’s win by first plotting a move for Aditya Khattar, who made no mistake heading home. Thakur netted the second goal to enhance the tally.

Thakur was obviously happy to play a big role in his team’s victory but he credited his success to the Manchester United shirts which gave him an ‘extra’ motivation.

“We have not got our school jerseys till now. In the last match we were not in proper uniform hence the officials asked us to have a proper uniform to maintain some discipline. However, our jerseys are yet to be ready therefore we decided to wear something common and similar with the Manchester United.

“I could not afford to leave the opportunity of wearing that jersey which I loved so much. That gave me an extra motivation and I was more inspired,” said the youngster, a ninth standard student.

Thakur, who is a big fan of Wayne Rooney, says “When I took the field I could just imagine how Rooney and Co. would feel while stepping on to the field with these jerseys on,” he added.

This is Thakur’s first season of the U-16 age group level. “Till last year, I was playing in the U-14 level and used to admire the hype and the challenge of playing at the senior level. I was keen to play competitive football. I am very excited that I did well in the second match of my career and keen to play like this in the future as well,” added Thakur, who plays in the forward position.
