Cricket fans and players in Victoria are excited and happy to see pacer James Pattinson coming up trumps in the just concluded Gabba Test in Brisbane, which Australia won by nine wickets.

Pattinson claimed five wickets for 27 from his 11 overs in the second New Zealand innings on his Test debut.

According to the Daily Telegraph, his Victorian teammates and fans watched with rapture before heading out for the third day's play against Sheffield Shield leaders Queensland.

"Our whole warm-up consisted of watching James in that little purple patch of bowling," Victorian coach Greg Shipperd said.

"The boys were dancing around the dressing room. It was just quality bowling, wasn't it? Good areas, good pace and beautiful presentation of the seam. He's come a long way in a very short time and looks like he's very comfortable in that environment," Shipperd added.

Shipperd said Pattinson's man-of-the-match achievement was no surprise.

"The Gabba is a great place for swing bowling and he was ready to go physically to bowl fast," he said.

"When you add the ability to present the seam and get just the right amount of curl he got, it's a pretty potent recipe. It certainly worked to their right-hand batters today," he added.

'Test cricket's a hard journey and there are going to be wickets and times and places where he'll need to add some little tricks and variations, but this is a great start for him," Shipperd said, adding that Pattinson had all the credentials to become a long-term Test star.
