* Born March 20, 1984 in Madrid.       

* A lifelong Atletico Madrid fan, Torres joined the club at the age of 11. He made his first-team debut as a 17-year-old in May 2001 when the club were in the Spanish second division.       

* In only his second appearance he produced a virtuoso match-winning performance against Albacete that brought the house down at the Vicente Calderon.       

* Known as "El Nino" (The Kid) he was made club captain aged 19 and was the team's leading figure on and off the pitch. He was likened to a Spanish David Beckham for his constant changes of hairstyle, appearances in promotional campaigns and even a video with a well-known Spanish pop group.

* Torres was the top scorer for Atletico for his last five seasons in the Spanish capital, his best campaign coming in 2003-04 when he totalled 19 goals. He scored 75 La Liga goals.       

* He was top scorer and named player of the tournament when Spain won the European Under-16 Championship in 2001. He repeated the feat when they won the European Under-19 Championship the following year.       

* He earned his first senior cap for Spain in a 3-0 friendly win against Portugal in September 2003 at the age of 19 and scored his first goal in a friendly against Italy in April 2004.      

* Moved to Liverpool in July 2007 in a 24.3 million-pound deal.       

* Scored the only goal of the 2008 European Championship final to beat Germany and played in the 2010 World Cup final, another 1-0 Spain win. Has registered 26 goals in 82 appearances.       

* Scored 65 Premier League goals for the Anfield club in 102 matches before leaving on Jan. 31, 2011, for Premier League rivals Chelsea.
