It was dream come true for 17-year-old left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh. After the turbanator was selected to represent Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, he feels the hard work for last five years has eventually paid off.

“It feels great as the hard work has paid off. My mom and dad got very emotional. All the credit goes to my parents and coach Dinesh sir who has been like a godfather,” Harmeet told DNA on Friday.

The youngster started playing cricket at the age of 12 and since then his mother Paramjeet Kaur would accompany him for cricket practice at the Shivaji Park from Malad. It wasn’t easy life though for the youngster travelling all the way and then sweating it out in the nets.
“I always dreamt of playing for Mumbai one day and then of course India,” said Harmeet, who has studied in the same school as Rohit Sharma did - Swami Vivekanand International — in Borivali.

“Rohit has been an inspiration for all the youngsters from the suburbs as he has started a trend of sorts for the young generation. Earlier, only cricketers from the city used to make it big but now things have changed,” added the Thakur College youngster.

Dinesh Lad, who was his coach during his school days, was all praise for the youngster. “He had the talent and the class to make it to that level. I first saw him when he was 12. Sandeep Patil had recommended his name to me. He had all the qualities that a good left-arm spinner like the great Bishan Singh Bedi had. He can give a good loop and turn the ball,” said Lad.

“Then later I sent him to Shivaji Park Gymkhana where he honed his skills under Padmakar Shivalkar and Praveen Amre,” Lad added.

Mumbai squad: Wasim Jaffer (Capt.), Ajit Agarkar (Vice-Capt.), Sahil Kukreja, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Ramesh Powar, Vinayak Samant, Dhaval Kulkarni, Zaheer Khan, Abhishek Nayar, Sushant Marathe, Onkar Khanvilkar, Murtuza Hussain, Iqbal Abdulla, Harmeet Singh.
